Star of BroadchurchAdult Life Skills and Attack The Block, Jodie Whittaker, has been announced as the thirteenth Doctor, the first woman to play the role.

It is an announcement that has split fans, with many still clinging to their outdated beliefs that the Doctor should only be played by a man. This is in spite of multiple gender-switching regenerations featured in the show’s recent series, most notably that of the Master to Missy (played by Michelle Gomez).

On the other side of the coin, however, many fans were thrilled with the announcement. Former Doctor Who stars tweeted their excitement and praise, as well as actors and celebrities from around the world.

Whittaker will feature in the Christmas 2017 episode (if only briefly), which will be Peter Capaldi and Steven Moffat’s last episode on Doctor Who.

It is as yet unknown when we will get a full series with Jodie Whittaker as the Doctor, although it is believed that Christmas 2018 could be the first we see of her in the role.
