There has been love, hate and drama in Albert Square for 35 years now, and we have to say that we love it. There looks set to be more chaos this week during the show’s 35th anniversary, so, in honour of EastEnders, here are some of the most dramatic moments that have blessed our screens.
"You ain't my mother" - 2001
The Slater family have always been a big part of EastEnders, creating havoc and drama. However, no Slater had a more dramatic moment then Kat when she told Zoe she was her mother and that her uncle Harry is the father!
Bobby kills Lucy - 2015
One of EastEnders’ longest storylines was the question of who killed Lucy. For over a year, the show created 13 suspected killers with characters being constantly questioned. After a lot of speculation, it was revealed that Lucy was beaten to death by her younger brother Bobby.
Who killed Archie Mitchell? - 2010
A dramatic storyline that went on for a long time – who killed Archie Mitchell? The storyline started on Christmas Day in 2009 and ended in 2010, and after much speculation, it was revealed that Stacey was the culprit! She eventually confessed after seeing husband Bradley fall to his death!
Roof-top fall - 2017
Possibly one of the most dramatic performances that EastEnders has ever seen. Abi and Lauren Branning climbed to the roof of The Queen Vic to stop their dad Max from jumping off. In their attempt to stop him, the girls dramatically fell off themselves, Lauren survived the fall but, sadly, pregnant Abi was pronounced brain dead later in the series.
Mo hits Trevor - 2001
In a disturbing domestic violence storyline, Mo was repeatedly emotionally and physically abused by her husband Trevor. After the relentless attacks, Mo eventually left her husband and finally stood up for herself. While leaving, he attacked her once again, however, she hit him with one of Pauline’s irons!
Janine and Barry's honeymoon - 2004
Janine Butcher, not the kind girl that she portrays, had numerous dramatic storylines through her time on Albert Square. Only just married and celebrating on their honeymoon, Janine told Barry that it was all part of her elaborate plan to inherit his estate. She then pushed him off a cliff and watched him die. Nasty.
Nick tries to poison Dot - 1990
In another attempt to inherit early, Nick Cotton attempted to poison his mother. The audience held their breath as Dot was about to take a bite of her poisoned dinner and die, but before she could, Nick pulled the plate away and couldn’t go through with killing his own mother.
Max and Stacey - 2007
Max Branning always seems to be at the centre of some drama on the show but, somehow, always seems to come out perfectly fine. On his son’s wedding day, it was revealed to his wife Tanya that he was having an affair with his soon-to-be daughter in law Stacey! Awkward…
The Mitchell's 'discover' Heather's body - 2012
Beloved Character Heather Trott was killed by Ben Mitchell. George Michael’s biggest fan was struck over the head with a picture frame, hit her head on the kitchen counter on her way down and was left to die on the floor. Jay Brown, Phil and Ben Mitchell all helped to cover up the crime, but eventually Ben went to a juvenile detention centre to pay for his crime.
The Baby Swap - 2010
When Ronnie’s son James sadly passed away, she swapped her baby with Kat Slater’s son Tommy; causing Kat to believe that it was her son that has passed away! The storyline went on for a long time, but in the end, a grieving Ronnie handed Tommy back over to Kat and turned herself into the police.
Dirty Den returns - 2003
Dirty Den returned to Albert Square 14 years after being shot and presumed dead by the EastEnders audience. In his dramatic entrance, he is identified by his step-daughter Sharon. Still holding his evil tendencies close to him, he quickly settled back into his ‘dirty’ ways.
Jamie says goodbye - 2002
Jamie Mitchell was ripped from our television screens after being run over by Martin Fowler in 2002. In the dramatic scene where he was fighting for his life, he said his goodbye to girlfriend Sonia Jackson, declaring his love to her and placing a ring on her finger.
Bradley Branning's death - 2010
Another dramatic Branning performance came when Max Branning’s son, Bradley, fell from the roof of The Queen Vic after trying to escape the police. Bradley fell to his death, leaving family members screaming on the street.
Grant and Louise's affair - 2014
Another incredibly powerful moment came when Tiffany Mitchell found out that her partner Grant was having an affair with her mum Louise after hearing it through a baby monitor!
Steven Beale's fake brain tumour - 2014
It isn’t the first time in EastEnders’ history that somebody has lied about having a disease, however, Steven Beale’s fake brain tumour was one of the sickest scams the show has seen. Steven plotted to use a picture of a dog’s tumour to stop Lauren Branning leaving the country, and the dramatic storyline has gone on to be one of the most talked-about plots in Albert Square history.
Mark's HIV positive - 2011
Peggy Mitchell, the Queen of The Queen Vic, had her part to play in many storylines. One of them was when she caused a horrendous scene by refusing to serve Mark a drink because he had aids. He fought back saying he was embarrassed and nervous to tell his friends that he had tested positive for the virus.
Nancy Carter punched Dexter Hartman - 2014
One punch made for great television after another altercation in The Queen Vic in 2014. The scene escalated quickly from an argument to a near fight, with Nancy swinging for Dexter. The dramatised bust-up ended up in a screaming match between Nancy and Roxy.
Boris Johnson at the Queen Vic - 2009
Who would have thought that today’s Prime Minister was once in a scene in The Queen Vic? The then Mayor of London appeared on the show in an awkward cameo with Peggy. Audiences were shocked when Boris just walked into the pub, not exactly dramatic but definitely awkward seeing the politician attempt to flirt with Barbara Windsor!
